The Sahara Desert, Algeria

This is a complete slice of a meteorite with a return address. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft was the first spacecraft to ever orbit an asteroid in the asteroid belt. One of the asteroids it orbited was Vesta. The data sent to Earth confirmed what had long been suspected, that the type of meteorite from which this slice was taken originates from Vesta. After Vesta collided with another asteroid, material was sent into space where it found itself in a Earth-crossing orbit and ultimately a new home. Accompanied by a custom armature.

97 x 58 x 2 mm and 33.6 grams.

Provenance: The Stifler Collection of Meteorites.
