Historian C. Elizabeth Raymond once said that the story of George Wingfield "was made for the movies." Wingfield was born far away from Nevada’s riches in the town of Fort Smith, Arkansas. As a child the Wingfields packed up and moved out West to Burns, Oregon where young George grew up inundated by the American West. Longing for more than the life of a buckaroo, Wingfield moved to Tonopah, Nevada dealing cards in a game of faro at the Tonopah Hotel. By the age of 30, George Wingfield was one of the richest and most powerful men in Nevada. Wingfield ran not only banks, but was active with politics, ranching, hotel management and even owned a dairy farm in Fallon. Although Wignfield lost much of his fortune after his banks collapsed during the Great Depression, his legacy is still felt in Nevada. This lot contains 6 knives, 5 forks and 2 spoons. Each knife and fork is marked with "NEVADA SILVER METAL." The 2 spoons have the Wingfield "W" stamped on the handle. One of the spoons was manufactured by Fosters Hamilton [REF: Raymond, C.
