If the American dream is to work hard and own a home, then the Nevadan dream is to strike is rich and keep it that way. George Wingfield was a man of action and opportunity; his rise from a ranching boy to multi-millionaire is an extraordinary story, but ultimately Nevadan one. His family moved out West from Arkansas when young George was a small child. In Oregon, the Wingfield children learned to ride horses and hunt birds. George was a wild an adventurous teen and even though his mother, Martha Spradling, disapproved of gambling and drinking, teenage George was caught a few times enjoying a drink and a game of cards. A friend suggested George take a look into a career of professional gambling, so in 1902 after a brief life as a cattle driver, George arrived in Tonopah. Tonopah was an exciting and wild place to be. George soon found work as a faro dealer and within a year he was able to partner with the owner of the Tonopah Club. By 1904, due to good mining investments and help from an old friend George S. Nixon, George Wingfield had earned about $4 million dollars, which formed the basis of his huge fortune earned over the ensuing years. He moved to Reno and would become active in politics, hotel management and ranching [C. Elizabeth Raymond,George Wingfield: Owner and Operator of Nevada.]
