NV - Washoe Basket and Ephemera from Cohn's Emporiam in Carson City, Nevada :
The Washoe Tribe basket weavers had a special relationship with Abe and Amy Cohn. They were the proprietors of Cohn's Emporium in Carson City, Nevada. Datsolalee was born around 1850 in the middle of the California Gold Rush. She is known as the most famous basketmaker in history. In the 1890s she was working for the Cohns as a housekeeper in Carson City. By night Datsolalee wove baskets to supplement her income. She offered some of her baskets to the Cohns. Recognizing her talent the Cohns offers Datsolalee full patronage, covering the costs of food, lodging and medical attention for her, her husband, and their children for life. Datsolalee died on December 6, 1925.
