Possibly the earliest of this collection is a silver plate dageurreotype image of a young girl. The plate seems to be made of 100% silver rather than the typical silver-plated copper. Stamped at the upper right is Scovill M.F.G., a Waterbury, Connecticut manufacturer of brass buttons and later, dageurrotypes and cameras. Scovill M.F.G. dates back to 1802. This plate could be as early as 1839 when Scovill M.F.G. began production of dageurreotypes. The company first modeled its work on the french design (silver plated copper). This plate could be of an experimental and/or prototype variety. By 1840, the company was making the silver plated copper variety of dageurrotypes (the most commonly made) [www.lampworks.com]. This plate is missing its holder. 4.5" x 5." These are believed to be ancestors of the Bowman's (Virginia City) as they were found in the house where the family lived since 1900. Photographers are all unnamed.
