Lot of 2. 1. Measures 8" x 4 7/8" mounted on a tan colored matte measuring 8 1/2" x 5". Three rows of twenty five people. All are male, with one little girl. Two are holding lanterns. J.H. Crockwell was photographer. He was born in Woodbury Iowa, worked in California (c1887), Nevada, and Utah. In California in 1895 he produced a souvenir book of Marysville and Yuba City with the Albertype Co. He had his own studio in Virginia City where he published a book of photos of mining towns and activity, which was called Souvenir of the Comstock. Crockwell retired from photography in 1900 [Mautz]. Two strips of tape on the bottom of the photo. Stains on the left side. One mark through the center of the photo. Focus is high, medium contrast. Good to fair condition. 2. Measures 8 1/4" x 6 3/8" mounted on a gray matte measuring 10 3/4" x 8 1/2". A messy row of ten people, seven women, and three men. They are at an unidentifiable location. Their names are written at the top in script writing, and underneath the photo in print both possibly in sequential order. Small note on the reverse, "Mrs. etto Toannehill [sp?]". Matte is bent on the upper right hand, and appears to be cropped from the bottom half, with stains and yellowing on the matte. The photo itself is in good in condition. High focus, and low contrast.
