August 31, 1865-A very rare invoice/receipt on the billhead of Leopold Kuh Assay Office showing assays made during the month of August for the Savage Mine and cost thereof. The invoice totals $135 and is marked “Recd paymt, Leopold Kuh.” There is an orange 2 ct. revenue stamp on the lower half of the sheet, marked through with an X and 1865. Leopold Kuh, assayer and metallurgical chemist, was considered to be Chinese by those who were unfamiliar with his assay business up until the mid-20th century because of the last name: Kuh. This came into play heavily when several of his gold ingot specimens’ authenticity and quality were called into question. Kuh however, was of Hungarian descent. According to one genealogy website Kuh is of an Austrian-Hungarian ancestry with a family name of Kantor originating in the Bohemia region of Europe. HKA#64580
