Incorporated in 1864. Cert. #274 issued to P. Casson for 10 shares. Signed by Joseph L. Watkins, president, and W.B. Agard, secretary. Vignette of beehive at center. Black border on crème paper, with light gold underprint: C.G. & S. M. Co. U/C. Datelined San Francisco. 5 ¾ x 9.” There are several Caledonia mines, mining corporations and gold mines (not gold & silver) to be found in California and the West, but none with the exact name and date as this certificate. The Caledonia Mine in Fresno comes closest, and there are of course many properties with the name Caledonia to be found in Colorado, Idaho and elsewhere. We believe this piece to be a Comstock piece because the company was financed in San Francisco where all the major Comstock mines were financed in the 1860s.
