Over 100 receipts in this group. A great way to recount who worked for the company and how much they were paid for each day of work. The receipts start in January of 1878 and include February, March, April, and May. December of 1879 is also included. On white paper with a thin red line border, all say “received from Isaac L. Requa, Supt.” The amount the miner received is on the next line. Then the amount of days the pay period covered and at what rate is on the next line. Lastly, the miner signed the receipt either by signing his name or with an X and witnessed by J. B. Stevens. Requa was the superintendent of the mine for about 18 years and an early Nevada politician. He headed the Republican Party in Nevada for about 20 years as its Chairman. Later on, Requa made more of his fortune by forming the Eureka and Palisades Railroad Company to service the Eureka Mining District of Nevada. The Railroad has an interesting history of success and failure up until 1938 when it finally closed [Wynn, “Issac Lawrence Requa,” no date; http://www.robertwynn.com/IsaacRequa.htm]. Good condition.
