Stateler and Arrington operated what some called a pawn brokering banking establishment. One blue hand tied R5 R2 perf stamp at left. Black on crème. Wells, Fargo & Co. Was the first banking house to open in Virginia City. The bank was unable to give loans to area merchants but made drafts drawn by mining companies in good standing with the banking world. The bank also received deposits and sold exchanges. 4). Paxton & Thornburgh, Bankers No. 17749 issued April 21, 1863. Signed by M. Brave. Brown on crème. Paxton & Thornburgh opened up shop in 1862. 5) Rare. B.F. Hastings & Co., Bankers No. 35 issued May 19, 1864. Signed by Almon Hovey. One blue hand tied R5 R2 perf stamp at left. Flanked by fancy bordering at top and bottom. One blue single ring B.F.H & Co. seal stamp at top. Folds present. Cut cancelled. Black on crème. B.F. Hastings never lived in Virginia City. He was a known Sacramento banker who operated there before and during the bank's branch existence in Virginia City. The branch had a quarter interest owned by the Virginia City branch manager A.K. Grim [Ref: Davis, History of Nevada, 1913, p. 625].
