Photograph measures 3.5” x 2.25” and 4” x 2.5” on white matte paper. Some wear on matte on the top left and right corner. There is also slight age marks on the photograph. It was photographed and produced by Sutterley Photography, located at No. 37 C Street, Cor. Taylor in Virginia City. Chief Winnemucca sits posed for a photograph, he is wearing a Paiute headdress and an elaborately detailed military jacket. The jacket could have been the same one given to him by the United States Army as a gift. Note his hair is not tied up, but hanging down and parted in front. Chief Winnemucca made a visit to Virginia City in September of 1864, the goal of which was to gain public appeal and support for Paiutes after the Pyramid Lake War. This photograph looks though like it was taken in the late 1860s because of the jacket he is wearing. Also note the style of the headdress he is wearing was commonly used by Paiutes of Mono Lake and Natives of Central California. [Zanjani, Sally Sarah Winnemucca. Pages 72-75.
