Saturday edition, Vol. III, No. 51. The Humboldt Register was the first newspaper in Humboldt County and it was started with much fanfare by William J. Forbes and Charles L. Perkins. The printing press was carried across the Sierras from Downieville, CA and paraded through the town and given a thirty-gun salute. Founded on May 2, 1863, the paper was well-known for the editorials of Forbes, who wrote under the name “Semblins.” Forbes sold the paper and by 1869 the Humboldt Register had been sold to the anti-Chinese Workingman’s Protective Union. This copy contains the text of the New Mining Law of February 27, 1866. [Lingenfelter, Richard E. and Karen Rix Gash. The Newspapers of Nevada: A History and Bibliography 1854-1979.
