Cortez District. Incorporated in 1896. Cert. #52, issued in 1896 at San Francisco, Cal. for 100 shares to Travers Knox Duncan, signed by L. Minban(?) as president. U/C. Cortez district, Eureka County, Nevada printed at the top. The town of Tenabo wasn’t founded until a large rush took place in 1907 so this company was probably named after Tenabo Peak in the southwest end of the Cortez Mountains. The name Tenabo is said to be a Paiute word meaning “dark colored water” (Carlson). The Cortez district dates to 1863 with the original district located on the western slope of Mount Tenabo. The district produced gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc among others (Tingley). A large size millsite vignette at the top and a miner pushing an ore cart at the bottom left. Black print on white.
