Lot of 2 very nice photographs depicting the town of Rawhide rebuilding after the disastrous fire that swept through the mining community on September 4, 1908. Photographs measure 8” x 5 1/2”, no mattes. High contrast and sharp focus on both. No photographer identified. Photograph one reads on the top right, “Rebuilding Rawhide After Fire”. On the left of the photo one can see building materials and some new construction. Also, in the shot is the most famous Saloon in Rawhide, The Northern, which was owned by Tex Rickard. The Northern sign reads clearly on the side of the building. Rickard was a well known mining camp figure. He was a part of promoting Rawhide’s incredible potential that was not realized to its full extent. Rawhide boomed in 1907 under much over-zealous speculation and grew to more than 10,000 inhabitants. By the summer of 1908, the town boasted 40 saloons, 28 restaurants, 30 hotels, 3 jewelers, 13 doctors, 10 barber shops, 9 bakeries, 9 lumberyards, 3 banks, some 125 brokerage offices [REF: Paher, Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps]. Photograph two is another view of the town. Of interest in the shot, is a number of businesses. Princess Theatre, Rawhide Queens Mine Co., Owl Lunch Room, and the Balloon Bar among others boast signs that can be read clearly. These pictures are very sharp and in great condition.
