Rare panoramic birds-eye-view photograph of Rawhide, NV. This 8”x 65” photograph sharply depicts the town Rawhide and its surrounding region. Labeled are Burns Hill, Grutt Hill, Balloon Hill, and Murray Hill. Various buildings are marked with a small circled number, hinting there was once a key to indicate these buildings and understand their historical importance. Many of the mining operations can be seen around Grutt and Balloon Hill. Rawhide was a town in Mineral County located around 55 miles southeast of Fallon. Good Condition, several water stains on bottom and right side. A frenzy over a gold and silver deposit by former miners of the Buckskin Mining Camp led to the swarm of prospectors coming to the newly formed Rawhide with aspirations to strike at rich. The town boomed, and stockbrokers and investors were quickly marketing Rawhide as the next Virginia City. The promised potential was never delivered and the mines produced far less profit than expected. In the short span from 1908 (the time of this photo) to 1910 the population of 7,000 had vanished to less than 500. Rawhide became a true ghost town in the 1960’s. Kennecott Mining Corporation and Pacific Rim Mining Corp developed the massive Denton-Rawhide Mine. The operation closed in 2002-2003 and the result was a mining operation that had mined and destroyed over what was the town of Rawhide.
