Number 20 issued to Clarence Cobb by E. Salisbury Smith, Secretary, and Loren B. Curtis, President on 7 September 1907 for 2,500 shares. On crème paper with a black border. The vignette is of a lion’s head left of the company name. The folds are yellowing on the reverse. Good condition. Homer Curtis of Denver invented the Dry Placer Machine in 1907. The machine could be purchased with either one rifle or two. Capacity was estimated at eight yards per hour. A group of Denver men, among whom were Dr. C.B. Lyman and District Judge Peter L. Palmer, formed the Curtis Dry Placer Machine Company. On the 7 September 1907, the group borrowed $500 from Clarence Cobb of Denver to get started. This loan was to be repaid from the net earnings of the Company before any dividends were declared. A news item in the Denver Post, May 25, 1908, offered blocks of 100,000 shares of stock at 15 cents per share until Saturday noon, 30 May 1908. The company obtained 60 acres of placer claims near Rawhide, Nevada, among others in the same state [Ref: The Hal Miller Files including photograph of the machine, news clippings (1908), and letters]. Fred Holabird says this stock is ultra rare. According to the Denver Public Library site, Palmer was an important person in Colorado political history. He was involved in republican politics and served as a federal judge. He also was involved in temperance and reform movements of his era.
