The author (Albert Brown) suggests the location be at a given place to benefit the area mines that he is sure "will prove very rich." The valley where the Pahranagat site lies was first crossed by the ill-fated Death Valley 49-ers. Silver was discovered there in 1865 by Ely and Hatch and soon thereafter, miners flocked there. But the boom only lasted a short time as the rush to White Pine District pulled the population from the valley. A few months into the summer of 1867, the mines were abandoned [Carlson, Nevada Place Names, 1974]. The valley is a Nevada desert oasis fifty miles from Caliente. The southern part of the valley has two lakes and is home of the Pahranagat Valley National Wildlife Refuge. - Clint Maish Collection
