c1910-Large solid copper molded ingot, stamped "SVMS" and "87.25 OZ" on top. Measures 5 1/2"L x 2 1/2"W x 1 1/2"H. This is a typical ingot mold with sloped sides, and the ingot`s base is wrinkled from the cooling metal. The company was Steptoe Valley Mining & Smelting Co. which existing from 1907 to 1914, when it was dissolved and became the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. The Stepto Mining Company was one of the most important copper mining companies in the state. Their main offices were in New York City, and the mines were in Ely and McGill Nevada. The smelter could process 1000 tons of copper bullion a day. See the 1909 Copper Handbook, pages 1269-1272. An excellent specimen, very rare.Possibly the earliest Nevada copper ingot known today.
