Postal cover postmarked Sep. 1908 in Jamestown, NV. Postmarks on reverse from Columbia, NV, and Elgin, Ill. The mining camp of Jamestown was formed following the discovery of gold on Pahute Mesa in early 1908. After more than 100 prospectors converged on the area, the town was platted in April, all the lots on Main Street had been sold in two hours, and the population had reached almost 400 by the end of the month. A variety of stores, saloons, hotels, restaurants, assayers, and a stage line to Goldfield were present by the end of May, as reported by the Jamestown News, the local newspaper. Despite all this "development," all the businesses were in tents, and only one actual buidling had been erected. After accomplishing its "promotional" duties, the newspaper disappeared. Fred Schultz was one of the main developers of the town during its boom, and was also one of the area's last residents in the 1930's. The mine production rapidly declined into 1910, and the post office was closed that same year. The area now falls under the Nellis Air Force Base Bombing and Gunnery Range [ghosttowns.com/states/nv/jamestown]. Previously Unknown
