Incorporated in Maine in 1906. Cert #27 issued for 525 shares to W. Hinckle Smith. Signed by Frank W. Holmes as president. The town site of East Ely was set up by the company in 1906 to provide housing to the employees of the Northern Nevada Railroad and the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. The Ely Town site Company, run by W.B. Thompson, took options on all unoccupied lands in Ely and acquired the water rights to the spring east of town upon which the town relied. The old-time residents of Ely were none too happy with this and men with shotguns camped on the hillsides to prevent construction of the water pipe through Ely (White Pine County gem help genealogy website). The water issue along with the depression of 1907 cut off funds for the development of the new town. This ended the goal of East Ely becoming the Central Copper City. W.B. Thompson was a heavy stockholder in the mines of the Ely district and was involved with Borax Smith to build a rail line from Ely to Tonopah. 11x 8 ½ ." EF
