1898-Lot of almost 50 checks including 11 checks with the following revenue types: RN-F1, RN-X7 (2), RN-G1 (2), RN-D7 (3), hand tied R15 R2 adhesive perf stamp over 2 cent Nevada state revenue stamp, and stamp tied R168 R15 on a Bullion and Exchange Bank certificate of deposit c1898. This lot also includes State Bank and Trust Co. check No. 3 signed by Mrs. Belle Butler, wife of Jim Butler, founder of Tonopah c.1903. Also, 6 unissued bank checks c1870s-80s, two Chinese Merchant Bank checks c1910. Davis notes that banking in Nevada was never profitable, because "a borrower might be rich the day that he borrowed the money and bankrupt within 30 days thereafter" [Ref: Davis, Sam, History of Nevada, pp. 132-3]. Residents and visitors often referred to Carson City simply as Carson. Some of the earlier bank checks listed here have "City" omitted while the later period checks use it. The conditions of these checks vary from good (clean, but bearing small tears and fold creasing) to excellent (very clean, crisp, and undamaged). HKA#63993
