Lot of 20 silver-lead ore specimens from Belmont, NV. With the discovery of silver bearing veins in the Toquima Mountains in 1865, the mining town of Belmont - part of the Philadelphia Mining District - was born. With a reported population of 10,000 people in 1867, this boomtown drew populations from all the surrounding mining shanties and soon became the county seat of Nye County. Within 20 years of production, nearly $15 million worth of silver and lead ore was exploited owing to the easy recovery of the oxide ores. Vein samples in this lot include argentite, cerrargyrite, partzite and stetefeldite. Belmontite - a silicate of lead - is also reported, though is not currently recognized as a valied mineral species. Collection locales include the Eldorado, Green & Oder, Monitor, and Silver Queen mines with reported dates of collection given as 1879. Samples range in size from 1 to 5 inches in diameter.
