Reese River District. Incorporated in New York in 1866. Cert. #106 issued to Clement S. Parsons (see above mining certificates with his signature or issued to him) for 20 shares on May 7, 1868. Signed by Chas. B. Hoffman, President, and by E.R. Seccomb, Secretary. U/C. "Not Liable to Assessment" printed in red at left end. Printer: E.A. Kingsland Co., N. Y. The company was formed in 1866 by a group of New York businessmen and had a successful ten-year run in the Reese River District of Nevada. Edwin A. Sherman was superintendent (1829-1914), a native of Brocton, Massachusetts. He worked for a series of newspapers, served in the army during the Mexican-American War, and then traveled to California in the Gold Rush where he mined for a while before once again turning to writing and editing. After serving in a variety of local offices in California and Nevada during the 1850s and 60s, Sherman accepted the position of superintendent in 1866. He resigned in 1869 to take up a series of public offices in Nevada. In 1877 he returned to San Francisco, spending his remaining years in the Bay area, contributing to local newspapers and magazines, especially on mining matters [Ref: www.baumanrarebooks.com/...mining/...new-york-and-austin-silver"]. We could find no information on Chas. Hoffman or on the ubiquitous Clement S. Parsons. An E.R. Seccomb, however, was listed as a businessman from Massachusetts who died in 1887-88 at age 71. He was listed in the American Baptist Home Mission Society’s report of May 1888 at its 56th annual meeting in Washington D.C. HKA#62893
