NV - 1880 - Nevada Steam Transportation Co. Memoranda :
Original 1880 prospectus. It has a vignette of the train on the top, occupying 1/3 of the document page. Possibly unique. Lot of two documents, one printed and the other handwritten. The printed document notes that the company was organized in New Jersey for the purposed of doing a transportation business, particularly in Nevada by means of steam road wagons. There is a wonderful vignette at the top of the page depicting one of these steam road wagons—similar to a locomotive with wheels, hauling two wagons. The document contains a report from John P. Courter, Superintendent, dated November 27, 1880 and addressed to William O. McDowell, President of the company, and regards Courter’s suggestions on some expenditures for the company to undertake in the amount of $85,000. The second piece is a beautifully handwritten document regarding the formation of the company, its purpose, and a proposal to issue $15,000 of the Capital Stock at par to help pay for Courter’s estimates of expenses. It is not signed, although in the body of the document it states, “The Undersigned hereby agree to take the amount of stock set opposite their names and pay for the same, when the $15,000 of stock shall have been subscribed.” The document further states that The company “…owns and has in operation at Columbus, Esmeralda County, Nevada, one of these locomotives and two wagons.” The road locomotives were made by Aveling and Porter, a company well-known among steam enthusiasts. Both documents are 2 pgs. each and measure 8.5 x 14.”
