NORTHWEST COAST RAVEN RATTLE, EARLY 20TH CENTURY. Carved in the round of two pieces of wood - hollow body of the raven forming the rattle proper, and prone human figure carved in high relief on its back. Bird's body and handle painted black. Beak, eyes, and human figure painted red. Row of shell beads set into ovals incised along outer edge of bird's wings. When held in the hand during use Indian people typically hold the rattle with the bird effigy facing the person, rather than it facing away. Size: 16-1/2.
