NORTHERN PLAINS BUFFALO ROBE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY. Possibly of Sioux origin. This robe exemplifies the earliest and rarest style and technique of painting known for buffalo robes. Overall pattern is generally called box and border." However this large, complex motif is understood to represent the body of a buffalo, with the legs, head, and even the entrails depicted. Basically two colors are utilized, however blue is an unusual addition on this robe. Lignite constitutes the brown pigment. The white or lightest color is usually kaolin mixed with hide glue. Size: 82" long x 66-1/2" wide. CONDITION: Numerous tears, large section missing from front quarter and smaller section from opposite front quarter, tail missing.
