NORMAN ROCKWELL (American 1894 - 1978)
Original advertising illustration
Mixed-media on board
9-1/2 x 7in.
Signed center-right, with an inscription on the back of the piece that reads: This is the blue needed in sketch, and this is the orange. Robert E. Lee.

This piece may be an early advertising illustration. As art historian Laurie Moffatt has noted in Norman Rockwell A Definitive Catalogue,"Norman Rockwell's early success and popularity as an illustrator gained him celebrity status at a young age; as a result his talents were sought by companies to advertise their products. Often he was presented with ideas drafted by advertising agencies and asked to illustrate their themes." Rockwell illustrations have been dated as early as 1915.

Provenance:
This piece was previously offered and sold in a Christie's East auction and has a sale label "KG 460-1-K2" on its back. The sale predated Christie's web-archived data.Condition Report: The study appears to be cropped at the bottom, as only a part of a letter form shows at the lower left.

Shipping: Framed - without Glass, Small (view shipping information)
