NO NEGRO SHANTIES IN NATCHEZ, MISS.
723. NO NEGRO SHANTIES IN NATCHEZ, MISS. An unusual war-date document 1p. oblong 12mo., Natchez, Miss., Oct. 14, 1864, a billing receipt issued to the Natchez Courier for the placement of an ad by the Superintendent of Freedmen, Lt. Col. Albion Mitchell. The original advertisement is tipped to the top of the receipt, in part: "...no `cabins' of `shanties' will be permitted...within the picket lines for shelter of unemployed negroes. All negroes having permission...to remain in the city...will report to Major Townsend...". Quite unique, with some spotting and the lower left-hand corner missing from the receipt, else very good. $100-200
