This photo shows an Indian woman being carefully watched by two barefoot children while she begins the firing process for her pottery. Hand written at the bottom: “No. 44. Pueblo Indian Woman Burning Pottery—D.B. Chase. Photo Santa Fe.” Clearly one in a series, the verso is labeled, “Travel by the Scenic Line of The World. The Denver & Rio Grande R.R. The Only Line Passing Through Salt Lake City En Route To and From the Pacific Coast . . . .” The rail company under this name and tag line existed between the above dates before becoming the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Company. D[ana] B. Chase was a well-known Colorado and New Mexico photographer, doing portraits, boudoir cards, and a great many Native American photographs between the years 1873 and 1897, the year of his death. He is said to have been a protégé of the great Camillus S. Fly of Tombstone fame [Ref: whowerethey.wordpress.com/category/photographer/d-b-chase/].
