Occupied in February 1862 by Confederate troops, the Battle of Albuquerque was fought during their retreat into Texas.

When the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1880, it bypassed the Plaza and located its depot and rail yards 2 miles east, in what became known as New Albuquerque. It was incorporated as a town in 1885, a city in 1891, and was absorbed by the city of Albuquerque in the 1920's. - Vinegar Collection
