Includes Report of W.H. Holmes, Chief. With the following papers: "The Ethnogeography of the Tewa Indians," Harrington, John Peabody. Peabody is known for his extensive data collection over his fifty year career. Includes a phonetic key, cosmography, meteorology, periods of time, and place names. With 21 plate illustrations and 30 maps of the Tewa Indians home in the upper Rio Grande Valley, NM. At the time of the publication, the Tewa inhabited 5 villages in New Mexico: San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Nambe, and Tesque, and one in Arizona, Hano. Harrington notes that the Tewa were reticent and secretive to religious matters and that their knowledge of place-names was "hard to obtain" [from the preface]. Harrington paid his Indian informants well, even at his own expense [sandiegohistory.org], and he notes here that they were key to his exploration of the area because the maps were so bad. Hardbound in green cloth with lettering and Native Person illustration in gilt. 636 pp. 8" x 10.5". - Vinegar Collection
