Lot of 41 rare zinc, iron, and manganese minerals from the Franklin and Ogdensburg, NJ. The unique marble hosted zinc deposits of Franklin and Sterling Hill are well known amongst mineral collectors given the diverse and mineral assemblage of these orebodies. The Sterling Hill deposit is one of the oldest mines in the US, with first recorded production prior to 1739. Following the development of extraction techniques to remove zinc from the ores in the 1850's, mining activities began in earnest with 11 million tones of zinc produced from the district. Primarily zinc minerals constitueted franklinite (zinc-iron oxide), willemite (zinc silicate) and zincite (zinc oxide). Additonal unique minerals in this suite include apophyllite, barysilite, bustamite, calamine, chalcophanite, hancockite, hardystonite, hetaerolite, leucophoenicite, manganite, nasonite, norbergite, polydelphinite, rhodochrosite, rhodonite, and tephroite. Also within this lot are analcite, axinite, clinohedrite, prehnite and thaumasite collected in Paterson, NJ and several examples of staurolite. Specimens range from 1/4 to 3 inches in diameter.
