Gold plated Mayor's badge. Obverse stamped: Mayor/Borough of Undercliff/1895. Approximately 1.5" X 2.75". According to the History of Bergen County, NJ, a book by James M. Van Valen published in 1900, the borough was formed in March, 1895 and the first Mayor was Eido H. Hinners. This badge came to us from a relative of Hinners. Van Valen states, "The Borough of Undercliff is one of the richest municipalities of its kind in Bergen county. It has a population of about 1500, has two churches, and a number of very important manufacturing establishments among them being the large chemical works of Goetchius & Morgan; the oil works of John Ellis & Co.; the moulding works of Hinners & Son . . . ." The Borough of Undercliff later became part of Edgewater, a historic borough located on the Hudson River. This badge represents a great piece of New Jersey history and the trend of "Boroughitis" that swept through Bergin county just before the turn of the 20th century.
