NIXON, RICHARD M.
152. RICHARD M. NIXON Superb content T.L.S. with his typical encircled initials "R.N." as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Oct. 24, 1973 to his friend, aircraft manufacturer and inventor William P. Lear. Twelve days earlier, Nixon had nominated Republican Minority Leader Gerald R. Ford to replace the disgraced Spiro Agnew who had resigned the same day, pleading no contest to charges of federal income tax evasion. Nixon writes in part: "...Your message of approval following my announcement nominating Congressman Gerald Ford as Vice President was most welcome and encouraging. In his twenty-five years on Capitol Hill, Jerry Ford has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle. I am confident that, as Vice President, he will earn the same high regard from all of our fellow citizens, and I look forward to working closely with him in the time ahead...". Fine condition. Written during the most trying times of Nixon's political career: only four days earlier Nixon had instigated the "Saturday Night Massacre" and just the day before he was forced to hand over some of the subpoenaed secret White House recordings which ultimately doomed his presidency.$1,500-2,000
