RIFLE. Cal. 256 Newton. S# 2169. Bbl. 24". Band mounted bead front sight w/ band mounted folding leaf rear sight marked "PAT. MAR. 5,07.". Top flat of bbl. marked "NEWTON ARMS CO., INC. / BUFFALO, N.Y. / PATENTS PENDING". Mauser style action w/ 2 rows of 3 locking lugs, safety on shroud & claw extractor. Bolt knob has single panel checkering. Front & rear receiver bridges have stippled flats. Dbl. set triggers. Hinged floorplate rotates to facilitate rifle takedown. Matching s# "2169" found on bottom of receiver, bottom of bolt handle & inside of floorplate. Schnabel tipped classic style sporter stock of fancy black walnut w/ point pattern hand checkering & steel grip cap. Modern leather sling held on original swivels. LOP: 14 1/16" over steel buttplate. Total of about 4,000 rifles were produced in 5 proprietary calibers. CONDITION: bbl. & action retain over 80% lightly faded blue showing edge & carry wear. Stock has good finish showing scattered light scratches & marks. Bore shows darkness in grooves & retains lightly worn intact rifling. (20-381/DS). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
