NEWSPAPER REPORTS ON THE MONITOR AND THE MERRIMAC
A good pair of war-date newspapers announcing the battle between the USS Monitor and CSS Merrimac on Mar. 9, 1862. Includes Harper's Weekly, New York, March 22, 1862, 16pp. with front page engravings: "The Ericsson Steel-Clad Battery 'Monitor'" and "Lieutenant Worden, Commanding the Monitor". Likewise the newspaper's centerfold has two great illustrations of the battle showing the Merrimac destroying the Union fleet at Hampton Roads and ramming the USS Cumberland, the other showing the Monitor "driving off the Merrimac" later that day. As expected, this newspaper contains numerous articles of interest related to the battle, the ships and men involved in the fight. With The Philadelphia Inquirer, March 11, 1862, 8pp., boldly announcing "FURTHER PARTICULARS OF THE TERRIBLE NAVAL CONFLICT; A REBEL GUN-BOAT CUT IN TWO; The 'Merrimac' has a Large Hole in Her Port Side; The Iron Ericsson Battery 'Monitor' more than aMatch for the "Merrimac'; Over One Hundred Lives Lost on the 'Cumberland'; Capt. Worden of the 'Monitor' Wounded...", with a great woodcut of the Merrimac. Both near fine.

Estimate: $100 - 150.
