OF SHREWSBURY, MASS. Cal. 70. NSN. Per "American Gunsmiths" from Frank M. Sellers (2nd Ed.), Joab Hapgood (1804-1890) was mfg. Flintlock & Percussion guns in Shrewsbury, Mass. from 1826-1864, then Boston, Mass. from 1847-1864. Half round, half octagon 43" barrel w/ bright front bead. Top of barrel flat marked "J HAPGOOD / SHREWSBURY". Bolster style breech with back action hammer lock marked "JOSH GOLCHER". Hardwood ramrod. Wedge fastened walnut half stock. Brass musket style buttplate, pineapple finial triggerguard, nose cap, thimble, wedge escutcheons & 2 ramrod pipes. German silver name plate on top of wrist. Scroll engraving on lock, hammer, barrel tang. Wheat chaff & pigeon engraving on buttplate peak & triggerguard bow. CONDITION: gray/brown patina appearance on barrel & lock with spots of pitting & corrosion. Worn appearance to finish with numerous large cracks on both sides around breech. Stock also shows sm. gouges. Dark pitted bore. Appears mechanically fine. Right side of barrel chanel has large missing piece of wood. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis.
