<b>404. SAINT JOHN NEUMANN</b> (1811 - 1860) Bishop of Philadelphia, a leader in the Roman Catholic creation of the parochial school system. The first American male to be canonized (1977). Very rare partly-printed D.S. <i>"+ Joannes Nep. Neumann Ep. Philad.</i>" 1p. folio, Philadelphia, Aug. 25, 1852, a document in Latin giving a gift of a relic from a Saint, likely to a parish. In part: <i>"...To those who see this letter we attest that for the greater glory of almighty God and the veneration of the saints through gifts We have given a particular [relic] of the Holy Virgin and martyr Dorothy taken from authentic documents which have reverently placed in a gold-embossed...case...to be given to others in whatever place of worship...[to] be displayed for the public veneration of the faithful in Christ...</i>". Vertical fold-tears repaired with tape on verso, rough spot at middle of document, tipped to another sheet, toned, overall good condition.<b>$1,500-2,000</b>
