NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: Batavia, AE ½ stuiver (6.03g), 1644, KM-31, Sc-18, United East India Company (VOC) emergency cast issue, date and mint in margin // VOC monogram, denomination above, surface porosity, a few light scratches, slightly bent planchet, Fine. Due to a shortage of copper coins, the Batavian government decreed on Aug. 19, 1644 to grant a Chinese man named Conjok the sole right to produce a certain amount of copper ½ and ¼ stiver pieces. This decision, however, was reversed on Sept. 21 by a dispatch from the Netherlands, thus putting an end to the coinage.
