Oil on canvas. Featuring an abstract expressionist composition. Signed and attr. Nejad Melih Devrim (Turkish, 1923-1995) on the lower left corner and dated 1964. 40 x 30 cm (15.7 x 11.8 in). Born to parents, the author Izzet Melih Devrim and artist Fahrulnissa Zeid, Nejad Devrim is the nephew to Cevat Sakir “The Fisherman of Halicarnassus” and artist Aliye Berger. As a member of a family nearly whose members are artists, Devrim left for Paris in 1946 - five years later completing his studies at the Istanbul Faculty of Fine Arts in 1941. In Paris where he lived until 1968, he exhibited with the celebrated artist of the day and appeared among the Paris intelligentsia together with the most prominent names of the Abstract Art. In 1968 he left Paris and got established in Poland, where he lived until his passing in 1995. Perhaps the most significant name of the modern Turkish art, Devrim is acknowledged as the first artist that has integrated the abstract into the Turkish painting. He crowned his artistic career especially through the abstract paintings he created in 1950’s. His works are included in the collections of Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture; Istanbul Modern; Musée National d’Art Modern, Paris; Musée d’Art Modern de la Ville de Paris; Nantes Musée des Beaux-Arts; National Museum of Warsaw; Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels as well as in other private collections.
