(NEGRO LYNCHING ARCHIVE)
726. NEGRO LYNCHING ARCHIVE A fascinating and horrifying group of six newspapers, all printed between 1901 and 1902 of which five carry graphic front-page reports of the lynching of blacks, and the sixth a story of a black man's murder of a white couple, then supposed suicide. Five of the newspapers are issues of the San Diego Evening Tribune, and the sixth is an issue of the Norwich, CT. Bulletin. The headlines and stories, which leave nothing to the imagination, are reported from every section of the country. Examples include:"...Oct. 2, 1901 NEGROES LYNCHED TWO MURDERERS TAKEN FROM JAIL AND HANGED BY A KENTUCKY MOB. To a Railroad Bridge - The Work Done Quietly and Quickly...May 17, 1862...Atlanta, GA....ENRAGED CITIZENS AVENGE THE KILLING OF OFFICERS BY NEGROES....Feb. 17, 1902, St. Louis...LYNCHED THE NEGRO: Member of a Minstrel Company Fired into an Audience of Whites in Missouri...Aug. 2, 1901, Carrollton, Ms....THREE NEGROES HANGED BY A MOB. TAKEN FROM JAIL CELLS AND STRUNG UP TO A TREE. TWO OF THE VICTIMS WERE WOMEN. Earnest appeals of Carrolton, Miss., Officials for Law and Order Resisted by a mob of 500 Whites...". Etc. The fact that the newspapers were all printed within a six-month period, and objective approach taken by the writers, graphically illustrate the frequency and casual nature of such events in American society. All newspapers are in very good condition, with little if any wear. $200-300
