NE - June 13, 1863 - Voucher, Mormon, Emigration Office :
Voucher issued on June 13, 1863 by the Emigration Office in Florence, Nebraska to Ane Rasmussen for the value of one dollar. The payer is “warehouse,” the voucher is for rations, and it is signed by H. Sittle and S.S. Hills. The document has a scroll top left with the amount of “1.00” and on the right “76,” likely the voucher number from Book 1. There is a vignette (1.85" x 1.25”) on the left which depicts a barefoot woman standing in a field. She has one hand on her hip and the other is holding a sheaf of plants on her head. On her right is a scythe. On the reverse is an ink notation “June 13/63” and “to 13 ½ bacon 54.” It appears this amount was deducted from the value of the voucher.
The Perpetual Emigrating Fund Company was established by the Mormon Church to financially assist those who wished to settle in Utah. The money was not a gift but a loan, with a signed promissory note. It said, in part, “We will hold ourselves, our time, and our labor, subject to the appropriation of the Perpetual Emigration Fund Company, until the full cost of our immigration debt is paid, with interest if required.” By 1869, over ten thousand Scandinavian converts had traveled to Utah by wagon or cart, using vouchers to aid with expenses. By Brigham Young's death, the fund had accounts receivable of a million dollars, without interest.
