Incorporated in North Carolina in 1881. Cert. #134 issued to Wm. Brandieth, Trustee for 100 shares. Signed by S. B. Hunt, president and Edwin H. Mulford, secretary. Three vignettes across the top: a view of a town showing industrial buildings in the foreground with smoking chimneys and buildings beside a riverfront in the background; two allegorical women and a nymph at center; and sailing vessels at sea on the right. A 4th vignette at bottom depicts a train at a rural stop. Red underprint strip across center of certificate. U/C. Printer: ABNCo., N.Y. 7 x 11. The company was formed to develop the production of the marketable ores in western North Carolina. In so doing, they needed to provide for the required rail (the Statesville and Jefferson Railroad) and telegraph lines, which in turn necessitated a survey from Statesville to Taylorsville, to Wilkesboro, to Gap Creek, to Jefferson. Salisbury was the home office New York the executive headquarters. The major mines were the Copper Knob, Ashe County, Gap Creek and the Crowell Gold Mine in Stanly County, among others. R. M.
