c1914-c1918-Lot of 2 panoramic portraits of military troops circa WWI. 1) A 9" x 47.5" framed panoramic photograph dated 27 April, 1918. The white lettering in the bottom center of the print indicates "6th CoO. 3rd Motor Mechanics Regt. S. C. Camp Greene, N. C. 4-27-18." The background shows the buildings, mess halls, and electric poles in Camp Greene. The foreground shows 64 men standing in the back row, 30 men kneeling in the center row, and 33 men, including 3 officers, sitting in the front row with their hats on the ground before them. A note on the rear of the photo indicates that it was captured with a #10 Cirkut Rotational Camera. The photographer is not noted on this image, which bears good contrast and only a few areas of blurred focus. The photograph itself bears some foxing and staining from age, and a small tear and hole across the body of the man second in from the left on the back row. In late 1917, The US and France agreed to share resources--France provided planes for the air force, and the US created a new maintenance organization to help allay the lack of French laborers due to war casualties. The Motor Mechanics Regiments, Signal Corps, was formed in December 1917. The 3rd and 4th regiments were not deployed until July, whereupon they serviced aircraft. The 1st and 2nd regiments serviced land-based motor vehicles. This photo shows the 127 men in the 6th company 3 months before they were deployed to France. 2) A 9" x 43.5" framed panoramic photograph, undated, that also appears to have been taken in Camp Greene some time during WWI. This photo shows typical military buildings in the background. The foreground shows 77 men standing in the back row, 32 men kneeling in the middle row, 33 men sitting in the front row, and a white billy goat in center. There are no visible markings or inscriptions on the front of the photograph, which shows good contrast and fair to good focus. The photo is foxed, and shows one small tear on the far right side. Three WWI Regiments were known to use a white goat as their mascot: The Royal Welch Fusiliers, the Royal Regiment of Wales, and the Royal Welsh Regiment. HKA#64519
