Fine content T.L.S. signed five NATO Supreme Allied Commanders, several of whom also were generals during World War II, 1p. 4to., Washington, June 1, 1978 to Rep. Bob Wilson. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus instigated by a Greek-backed coup, an embargo was placed on arms sales to Turkey, a NATO member. The ex-Supreme Allied Commanders react, In part: "...we view with alarm the deterioration in NATO's southern flank...and the increasing alienation of Turkey...Turkey is vitally important to our Western collective security...it controls the passage of Soviet was vessels...houses large numbers of strategically important U.S. and NATO facilities...for collecting intelligence...provides an air defence warning...provides a major contribution of army forces...Greece would be surrounded by neutral and Communist states...[we] strongly support the lifting of the embargo on arms...".
