the stuff legends are made of
(1722-1776). Revolutionary War officer and patriot; president of the NY Provincial Congress (1775). Under General Abercrombie, Major Woodhull served in the attack on Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga. Appointed brigadier general in 1775, he was head of the militia when the British landed on Long Island; mortally wounded after his surrender in an engagement with British light horse a few days later when his meager troops were surrounded. ADS, 1p, 13"x16¼”, Suffolk County, NY, Mar 10, 1774. Conveyance to Zechariah Hawkins of Suffolk County on receipt of 75 pounds, “one whole share of Meadow Being Number Nine and also one Equal half of another Share Being Number Ten Situate on the South Side of the Island on the East Side of Connecticut in the new purchase at a place called Newcomach” with free use of stock yards, “foddering” yards and appurtenant buildings. Boldly penned and signed. Almost entirely separated center horizontal fold repaired with archival tape on verso; normal toning; light foxing along folds; occasional edge nicks with minimal paper loss; else VG/Fine. Woodhull’s fate at the hands of the British later was embellished to legendary proportions. It was told that after he had surrendered his sword following a surprise engagement, he was ordered by his British captors to say “God save the king!’’ Brig. Gen. Woodhull replied defiantly, “God save us all!’’ At this, a furious British cavalryman slashed Woodhull with his saber, and the Long Island general died within days.
