NATHANIEL GREENE (1742-86) American Revolutionary War Major General; commanded Army of the South....
NATHANIEL GREENE (1742-86) American Revolutionary War Major General; commanded Army of the South. Wardate ALS, "N Greene", as Quartermaster General, 1p, June 12, 1777, 8vo, Camp of Middle Brook (NJ), to General Benjamin Lincoln, nice content. Reads, "...His Excellency [George Washington] has Just received your letter and is very sorry the men are exposed to the weather as its entirely contrary to his intentions, and the order he gave. Major Forsyth General evens aid de Camp must have mistaken General Stevens or General Stevens his Excellency. The General wishes the officers to be acquainted with the mistake and the men allowed a Gill of Rum to refresh them - which you will please to give an order for on the Commissary - We had corresponding Intelligence with yours last Night from Bornum Town..." Adds a short postscript on verso, "Inclosed is a memorandum from his Excellency to be immediately attended to." With integral address leaf, completed in Greene's hand to "Major General Lincoln, on the left." What Greene alludes in the last line is the British advance of 18,000 men from Perth Amboy to New Brunswick, for a possible foray against either Washington's main army or the City of Philadelphia. General Howe attempted to lure Washington out of his strong position at Middlebrook and fight in the open, but Washington refused to move. Howe would later move his troops by water to Philadelphia. Integral leaf is tipped to another sheet. Couple of foxing spots and light soiling, o/w VG. $2,500-3,500
