American Revolutionary War major general commanding Army of the South. Greene was president of the military court that tried British major John André, the accomplice of Benedict Arnold. War-date ALS “Nath Greene QMG,” 2pp, 4to, [Springfield, Jun 1780]. To Colonel James Abale (Abeel) at Morristown, NJ. In part, “The General has just received Intelligence that the Enemy still mean to penetrate the country. He has given order therefore for the removal of all the most valuable public stores from Morris to Succasunna. Please to find a person there immediately to prepare Stores for their reception...The order for moving the stores is to leave the Army at full liberty to make the most of every opening the Enemy may give to attack them to advantage.” On a personal note, the general asks, “I beg you’ll take care of Mrs. Greene’s Phaeton until further orders and provide for its safety should the Enemy penetrate as far as Morris which by the by I have no idea of...” Boldly penned and signed. Minor occasional foxing; o/w a Fine example. Though later docketed as “Camp Springfield Jun 1779,” this is incorrect. The letter was written after Jun 11, 1780, probably about the time of the battle of Springfield in June of 1780. After a winter of great suffering there was a general defection of the troops, and Baron von Knyphausen, learning of it and hoping to deal a decisive blow to the Continentals, hastened from Staten Island. Though he succeeded in taking Elizabethtown and burned the village of Connecticut Farms, he was driven back from Springfield toward the coast. Going north, Washington had left Greene to cover the country and the public stores. Henry Clinton, having joined Knyphausen, attacked Greene at Springfield on Jun 23, 1780, but was held at bay and thereafter retreated to Staton Island. Beautifully matted and contained under glass beside a lithograph portrait in uniform and descriptive plaque. Handsomely framed. Overall 32½"x22".
