Union brigadier general who led the 30th MA distinguished at Baton Rouge and Port Hudson. CDV three-quarter-length portrait in dress uniform identified in period ink on border and on verso. No backstamp. Light soiling; o/w VG. Described as overbearing and quarrelsome, Dudley was present when Billy the Kid escaped from McSween’s mansion during the Lincoln County War in New Mexico. He was accused of refusing to keep the peace when he led a company of infantry that helped make a shambles of the mansion, appearing to side with the Murphy-Dolan faction. He was later cleared by a court of inquiry. Fighting Apaches, he led the expedition that ran “Victorio” into Mexico in 1890.</span></p>
