[NAPOLEONIC WARS] During the Peninsula War, British Army Major Robert William Patrick writes to Marshal William C. Beresford (1768-1854) regarding the military situation. Lengthy ALS, 5pp, 4to, Villa Real, [Portugal] Apr 7, 1809. Superb military content describing the guerilla warfare in the days preceding Arthur Wellesley’s (later Duke of Wellington) arrival in Lisbon to take command of the British forces in Portugal on Apr 22. This descriptive dispatch regards the suggestions for the defense of the Portuguese provinces by Brigadier General Silveira, the encouragement of insurrection against the French whereby he relates the fierceness of the people in cutting off their own communications, and concludes with Patrick’s advising Beresford of the execution of General Lima by his own people who considered him a traitor. Boldly penned and signed. Four mounting strips along left marginal edge; o/w VG. Excellent research material.
